On Monday, June 16th, Hebrew Theological College (HTC) held a dedication ceremony for the newly-renamed Eli “Moose” Greenberg z”l Food Service Office. The office was renamed in memory of our beloved alumnus and longtime Director of Food Services, Eli Greenberg, who passed away tragically in 2022 at the age of 43.
Family, friends, rebbeim, and HTC staff gathered to honor Eli’s nearly 30 years of connection and devoted service to our Yeshiva. The plaque dedicating the office in his memory includes a Talmudic quote, that, according to HTC CEO Rabbi Shmuel Schuman, Eli personified: “A person who benefits Torah scholars from his belongings, the Torah considers him as if he clings to the Divine Presence.’”
Rabbi Josh Zisook, Director of Philanthropy and a long-time friend and colleague, highlighted Eli’s pivotal role in virtually every Yeshiva program. “Eli put his heart and soul into everything—from Shabbos of Chizuk and Yamim Noraim programming to Chanukah parties, melava malkas, shabbatons, class trips, the cRc Pesach Fair, graduations, and countless staff simchas. Eli was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. He loved HTC—it was his second home.”
In addition to the plaque renaming the office, a second plaque, featuring Eli’s picture, was installed directly across from the food service line so that Eli’s legacy will always be known to all who eat in our Dining Hall.
The plaque reads:
“In Memory of Eli Greenberg, z”l HTC's beloved Food Service Director and a fixture of our Yeshiva for nearly 30 years; Who provided the kemach that enabled our students to flourish in their Torah learning and academics; And who always went above and beyond to support them—with skill, dignity, humor, and compassion.”
“My father liked working behind the scenes, and getting his job done,” said his son Yosef, who would graduate from HTC’s Fasman Yeshiva High School later that evening, in his remarks at the dedication. “He knew the effect he was having on everyone who came into this kitchen, everyone who came into the Yeshiva, and everyone he met.”
The dedication ceremony also featured remarks by Yedidya Shabat, Eli’s closest friend and FYHS Class of 1997 classmate. Rabbi Zvi Zimmerman, HTC Mashgiach and fellow 1997 classmate, taught Mishnayos, followed by Yosef reciting Kaddish. The ceremony concluded with Yosef and his sister Gracie affixing a new mezuzah to the office door.
May the memory of Eli’s unwavering dedication continue to serve as a zechus for our Yeshiva and all of Klal Yisrael. May his neshama have an aliyah.
