FYHS Competes in Annual Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament in NY

In March the FYHS varsity basketball team made its third appearance in Yeshiva University's annual Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament, which brings together 20 Jewish high school basketball teams from around the country.

After a tough opening round loss to eventual tournament champion TABC of Teaneck, NJ, the varsity rebounded with a nice win over Farber Academy of Detroit, setting the stage for a backyard brawl against Ida Crown on Saturday night at TABC in Teaneck. Our squad was down double digits to ICJA at half, and almost pulled off a ferocious comeback but fell a bit short; nevertheless, the hometown rivalry game provided an electric atmosphere in the TABC gym, which was standing-room only. The next day the team defeated Katz Yeshiva High School of Boca Raton, FL, and then lost its final game on Monday morning to MTA, though the game was overshadowed by FYHS senior Adir Amster joining an elite club as he scored his 1,000th point in a Fasman Yeshiva uniform. Adir, who averaged 17 PPG at Sarachek, was named All-Tournament 2nd team, while Ezra Schwartz was named to the All-Star Team.

In addition to the competition on the court, the HTC development team of Rabbi Josh Zisook and Mordy Greenland put together a fabulous "Leil Shishi" event at the nearby Radio Hotel rooftop that followed FYHS' opening Thursday evening game. A delicious buffet was accompanied by Yeshiva swag and live music from guitarist/vocalist Eli Levin. Yeshiva rabbeim, including FYHS Principal Rabbi Aaron Leibtag, Rabbi Yosef Polstein, and HTC CEO Rabbi Shmuel Schuman were all in attendance, together with the varsity team members and the families who made the trip; FYHS/HTC alumni from around the NY/NJ region, including several currently in school; and Ida Crown players and coaches, who attended as our guests.
