This past Sunday, a group of our talmidim had the opportunity to participate in the Model Beis Din competition. Model Beis Din is an incredible program, where schools from across the country spend months learning a complex halachic question - this year, the question of conjoined twins. Each week, these students would get together and study both sides of the debate, "Are we allowed to save one twin's life by sacrificing the other?"
Over the course of the year, the students delved into this question, particularly the ruling of Rav Moshe Feinstein that it is permitted to save the life of one twin at the expense of the other. They debated the rules regarding the sanctity of human life, and what constitutes a person as a "rodef". Students even looked into parallel responsa discussing similar cases, where poskim grappled with issues of life-threatening situations and how to navigate them.
After close to six months, the students prepared to present in depth, convincing arguments for both sides of the debate. They flew to New York, joining Rambam Mesivta, TABC, Mesivta of Philadelphia, JEC, Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, MHA Memphis, and Ezra Academy at Lander College for a wonderful Shabbaton. The competition itself took place on Sunday, culminating with a rigorous "drishah v'chakirah" with the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Sacks.
We applaud the entire group for their dedication, and are proud for all the incredible learning they accomplished!
